More Transport Delays Chinese New Year Quarantines Pending

South China newspaper states that feeder operators in southern China plan to freeze service throughout the Chinese New Year. China has reinstated the suspensions as part of its zero-Covid policy in order to enforce quarantine procedures designed to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Hapag-Lloyd, Evergreen, and Ocean Network Express (ONE), carriers that operate feeder operations, are planning to halt bookings as a result of the quarantine move and prepare for additional supply chain delays. Currently, the suspension pertains only to small port cargo deliveries in the Fujian Province and Pearl River Delta area

Prior to Covid-19, tributary operators would commonly suspend ports for 2-3 weeks. However, this suspension will further complicate matters for shipping firms using smaller Chinese ports. China's New Year will be on January 31, 2022.

By permitting freight to sit idle at bigger ports in China, transport carriers want to prevent further supply chain bottlenecks, consequently their choice to inform customers about a halt in bookings at certain locations. Various reasons have led to a container pile-up in major ports around the world, including in U.S. ports such as Long Beach and Los Angeles. Adding more strain to an already-strained supply chain is not what carriers want.

As part of the government's strict zero-covid policy, crew members of shipping vessels must spend several weeks quarantined when they return from vacation.
