Import Duty When Shipping From The USA
Import duty is when you have to pay a fee for importing goods into the European Union and the UK. It is, therefore, advisable to know the basic rules and regulations regarding shipping from the USA so as not to be surprised by the total cost.
When importing goods from the USA into the EU, they must all be declared to HM Revenue & Customs and are subject to VAT and a customs duty, including items bought over the internet.
If you are required to pay import duty on a delivery, customs in the UK will automatically let your courier know. They will then proceed to contact you to tell you how much you will need to pay and when it is due.
Importing from the United States requires enrollment, especially if the goods are intended for commercial sale as part of business activity. It also requires you to have an EORI, or Economic Operator Registration and Identification number. Without this, you will be unable to file an import declaration, and customs will block your goods until you have received one. A relatively straightforward process, registering for an EORI, should take no more than three working days to obtain. If your company is already VAT registered in the UK, you may already have one.
When importing goods from the United States, it is also essential to check for extra anti-dumping duty charges. This is a tariff placed on goods and imports from other countries that are deliberately priced to undercut prices on comparable products with the UK. Therefore, these charges are designed to protect the economy and local businesses from unfair competition from overseas.
