Trucks are disproportionally large contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. According to a study by Transport and Environment, trucks account for 22% of the EU’s road transport carbon dioxide but this amount is much less than 2 percent of the traffic on European roads.

This is in contrast with electric hybrid vehicles like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV which generate virtually no GHG’s while driving on an electric charge alone.  Similarly, electric busses only require power from overhead lines when running at lower speeds, so they emit even less than their hybrid counterparts.

As major automakers release more electric trucks to the global market, fleet operators can already determine how they plan on charging each truck for specific use cases. For example, think about small vehicles that operate in cities, medium vehicles that operate in larger cities, and intercity vehicles that travel from city to city. Technological and economic factors play a part in which approach is followed regarding vehicle charging.

Some companies will adopt high-power DC while some might adapt slower low-power AC. It all depends on what your charging strategy is based on the characteristics of the use case. It should be noted that no matter what approach is taken, fleet operators will still switch between low-power AC and high-power DC when needed for their specific use case.

Depending on a subject’s access to the grid, power needs will vary in complexity and design depending on their location. For example, rural installations allow for businesses to exceed in harnessing the power of the sun with solar energy. Urban sites are hampered by space and power limitations, so they need to be more innovative when it comes to how they get their power needs to be met.

EV charging infrastructure is evolving at the same rapid pace as it goes through its transformation from a self-powered car to an electric vehicle. EV owners will need to plan carefully and constantly for this transition.
