Comparing early 2020 with 2021; how is 2021 stacking up?

At the beginning of the year, trade was down considerably, however, we have started to notice improvements, with a brighter future insight. According to The Cabinet Office, in January, the outbound movement of lorries across the Short Straits was at approximately 67 per cent of the levels in 2020. Since then, there has been a noticeable improvement. Within the first half of February, the outbound flow of lorries increased to 85 per cent of the levels in 2020. Therefore, if we continue on these levels, we should soon reach the levels that we were experiencing last year.

A number of factors have resulted in the decrease in trade levels, but the future is bright

Trade was clearly down in January, yet things are improving, as a lot of companies are adjusting to the new costs and red tape that are in play when trading with Europe. Of course, the restrictions relating to COVID-19 have also had an impact, contributing to the slow start to the trading year. We cannot ignore the considerable stockpiling that happened at the close of 2020 either, as companies started to prepare for changes within the EU.
