Coronavirus impact on the transportation and logistics industry worldwide

From the beginning of 2020, many countries across the world shut down their borders and limited levels of transportation in a bold attempt to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Due to this, the pandemic has had a significant impact on the logistics industry, disrupting supply chains and the transport industry. Here are some of the impacts the coronavirus has had on the logistics industry worldwide.

Movements by Air

During the start of the year, air freight rates from China and Europe into the US increased. However, as we approach the end of 2020 rates have stabilised significantly. There were reports of backlogs building up around the Yangtze River and many PPEs that were sent out were shipped via air. There was an increased level of passenger air travel in several key countries around the world.

Movements by Sea

By April 3, 2020, 149 blank sailings were announced for key deep-sea shipping routes. This was attributed to the coronavirus pandemic. 108 were announced in the period between Chinese New Year and the middle of March. This was when the coronavirus outbreak began to unfold through china. Empty containers were also left stranded in the incorrect locations. Now, ports in Mexico, Canada and the US are operating without delays.

Movements by Road and Rail

Finally, there have been several changes to road and rail logistics. Rail traffic has decreased by 5.5% due to the restrictions in the US. Border crossing times by road have also increased by 6% and the road freight market has declined by a massive 17%.
